Shades A Cappella Concert

  • Summer Shack 149 Alewife Brook Parkway Cambridge, MA, 02140 (map)

Ticket sales for this event have closed.

Join us on Friday, January 9 for a performance by the Yale University undergraduate a cappella group, Shades.

Shades is a co-educational a cappella group founded to celebrate music of the African Diaspora and African-American tradition. In the fall of 1988, a group of Black students came together to create a space at Yale University where their voices - and the music they loved - could be heard.

Founded by Titilayo Ngwenya ‘92, a Boston-area native, Shades has risen to become one of Yale’s premiere a cappella groups. The group’s name in itself stands as a testament to their appreciation of diversity within the group as they celebrate the depth and complexity of the Black experience.

Light refreshments will be served starting at 6 pm and a cash bar will be available. The group’s performance is scheduled from 6:30-7:15pm; the event ends at 8:00pm.

The venue is the flagship Cambridge location of Jasper White’s Summer Shack. Conveniently located across the street from the Red Line Alewife T station, Summer Shack has plenty of free parking and is accessible with a stair lift as necessary. We will be using the Galley Room, which is a large private space off the main entrance of the restaurant. Summer Shack is, of course, open for dinner as well, so feel free to make a reservation for dinner after the show and enjoy their $2 oysters on the half shell along with a large menu of New England seafood and other favorites.

A nominal registration fee of $20 per person is requested to help support the group’s upcoming spring tour.  Additional donations to the group are welcomed and are tax-deductible when donated through the Shades Alumni Family, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
