Summer Service Fellowships

Every year, YaleBoston is the financial sponsor and host for a group of Yale undergraduates who receive fellowships to work at service-oriented nonprofits during the summer. Students engage in innovative projects while working for nonprofits around Boston during an eight-week stay. Because these are unpaid, service-oriented positions, we provide a stipend for the students and arrange free housing with local alumni.

As described by the Yale Office of Career Strategy:

The Yale Alumni Community Service Fellowship (YACSF) program is an internship program that places students in paid eight-week community service positions throughout the United States. This program was initiated in 1989 and allows students to work in substantive positions within nonprofit organizations. The program has a close partnership with the local Yale Alumni Clubs who support the positions in their particular location. The stipend for this fellowship is $4,000.

Peter Gerson '17, who interned for the Renewable Energy Alaska Project through the program, said:

The Yale Alumni Community Service Fellowship experience was easily one of the most valuable experiences I have had throughout my time at Yale, and has served to provide me a lot of necessary experience and direction as I look to start my career. Furthermore, the time spent and memories made with the people I worked and live with will stay with me forever and some of the most enjoyable moments of my life. I have been introduced to new things and ideas that will stay with me forever. Wherever I go, I will be sure to bring a little bit of the arctic with me from now on.

One alumnus wrote:

For many years my family and I enjoyed having two Yale students stay at our house each summer as part of the Community Service Fellowship program. By providing them with housing it was nice to help make possible their time in Boston and their internships at worthy non-profit organizations. They consistently seemed to enjoy being in the city and learning more about the "real world" of post-college work and a possible career path.

Our suggested donation is $500, but please feel free to contribute whatever you can. If you would like to host Community Service Fellows during their stay in Boston, please contact us at outreach@yaleboston.org.
