Digging into the Past: An Evening with Archaeologist Kathryn Bard

  • Union Club of Boston 8 Park Street Place, Boston (map)

Please join us on Wednesday, November 5, for a fascinating conversation with Dr. Kathryn Bard M.F.A. ‘71, Professor Emerita of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Boston University. Her areas of interest include the late prehistory of Egypt, the origins of complex societies and early states in northeast Africa, and the Red Sea trading network in the Bronze & Iron Ages. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of the National Geographic Society’s Chairman’s Award for Exploration.

Dr. Bard will share stories and insights from decades of fieldwork, including excavations at a palace near Aksum, Ethiopia, dating to the late 1st millennium BC and 1st millennium AD and at the Harbor of the Pharaohs at Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea, where her team  unearthed seagoing ships and other relics linked to ancient Egypt’s sea trade. Their work was featured in “Building Pharaoh’s Ship,” an episode of the PBS series Nova.

This special event will take place at the historic and elegant Union Club of Boston. The evening will begin with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, followed by the talk and plenty of time for your questions.

Tickets are $35 for dues-paying members of the Yale Club of Boston and $45 for non-members.
